I have been interested in jewelry for as long as I can remember. When I retired from teaching at a junior college, I decided to take a few beading classes and was soon hooked! I started trying different designs and learning as much as I could about the art of jewelry making. All of my designs are one of a kind creations. I also do customized pieces so you can help in the design process.
I design jewelry that combines elements of the earth/ocean and old/new. I have traveled throughout the U.S., Mexico, the West Indies, Hawaii, Peru, French Polynesia, Australia, New Zealand, Greece, Egypt, and Africa picking up stones, coral, sea glass, beads, gemstones, and pendants that I use in my designs. I get creative inspiration from the jewelry I study on my travels. For example, several years ago I met a bead historian in Tucson who introduced me to trade beads. Now many of my designs include pre and post Colombian trade beads, some that are
thousands of years old. I also give presentations on the history of beads.
In addition, I use ornamental antiques in my creative designs. These include vintage items such as keys, compacts, lockets, civil war relics, coins, perfume bottles, buttons, crosses, etc.
Many of my pieces have stories connected to them (check out my favorite stories here). These stories relate to the history of the beads or artifacts I use, the place where the material was found, or the power of the gemstones used. Stories connect the buyer to the piece and demonstrate its uniqueness.
My granddaughter has always referred to me as “The Jewelry Goddess” so when I needed a name for my business, “Zatara” came to me in a dream. Tara is the Sanskrit name for goddess. So I hope you can find a piece that speaks to you. Whether you wear the jewelry yourself, or share it as a gift, you are wearing “the Goddess within”.
